3 Ways My Engineering Background Helps My Craft Business
When we think of engineers, the first thought may not be crafts or creative work, but surprisingly many engineers can find connections between technical thinking and craftsmanship. I have personally experienced how the skills I learned as an engineer have helped me develop my craft business. Here are the three main ways my engineering background has supported my craft business.
1. Problem solving 🔧
As an engineer, problem solving is a core part of my job. I am used to approaching every challenge logically and systematically. The deeper I immerse myself in craft entrepreneurship, the more I realize how important individuality is in today’s world. Mass production has made our lives formulaic and impersonal, but each of us is unique. We need accessories that tell our story – not just blend in with the crowd. This mindset has helped me create unique, handmade products that stand out from the crowd and speak to the customer’s personal style.
2. Accuracy & Details 🎨
My engineering skills have developed my precision and attention to detail. Every craft project requires care and precision, and this is especially evident in my embroidery designs. I design details that bring nature to life – tiny bees, delicate flowers and their life cycle from bud to bloom and finally to the drop, just like in nature. This precision not only improves the quality of the products, but also creates those small and lovely details that make the products special and recognizable.
3. Efficiency & Optimization ⏱️
My six years of engineering experience have taught me important skills in time management and prioritization. When balancing a 9-5 job and my craft business, it’s important to work efficiently and systematically. My engineering background has helped me create clear routines and processes that help me manage my time better and achieve a balance between work and entrepreneurship. Such optimization has also helped me ensure that my craft business is sustainable and can grow over time.
