Markets and fairs: A small business perspective

Markets and fairs are great places to meet customers – both loyal followers and new faces. They offer great visibility and there's nothing better than seeing my familiar supporters arrive or noticing a new customer taking an interest in my work.

However, not all events are the same. Market prices can range from free to hundreds of euros, while trade fairs are usually much more expensive and harder to get into. However, a higher price does not always guarantee better sales figures. So far, my products have sold better at the market. Maybe I just chose the wrong trade fair? This brings me to an important lesson…

Please research the event carefully before registering.

Before registering for an event, it’s a good idea to research it carefully. Does the event have a strong marketing plan that will attract attendees? Is it an established event or a completely new one? Gather as much information as possible in advance so you can avoid wasting time and money on events that don’t attract the right clientele for your products.

More than just selling – creating connections

In addition to selling, markets and fairs offer a great opportunity to meet other sellers and exchange experiences. I have had inspiring conversations with other small business owners, sharing experiences, challenges and tips. The world of a craft entrepreneur can be challenging, but surrounded by like-minded people, the journey is even more rewarding.

Every event is an opportunity to hone your sales pitch and customer interactions.

How you display your products, what signage you use, and even your own interaction style can have a big impact on sales. I’ve learned that a well-organized and inviting display attracts more customers, and a warm, engaging approach makes them stay longer and make purchasing decisions. Experimenting with different displays, adjusting pricing information, and seeing what works best has helped me improve my personal sales experience.

I hope this gives you some perspective on running a small business like mine. Although there are ups and downs along the way, I am really enjoying this personal selling experience and I look forward to attending more markets and trade shows this year!
